Bringing Historical Context to Today’s Politics

“If history doesn’t repeat itself, it certainly rhymes.”
          – Mark Twain

Twain had a good point. Cable news gives you information with no context. Blogs are pitter-patter.

My History Can Beat Up Your Politics has been examining the history behind today’s political debates since 2006. Host Bruce Carlson applies what’s in those old books in libraries, what former Presidents did and said, what the Constitutional Convention and the Supreme Court decided, and what events have transpired in American history to today’s political action: How did President Washington handle a midterm loss? What happened to Grant’s Presidency when there was scandal? How did Lincoln snatch the nomination? How did Wilson achieve a bare-knuckles re-election?

He also takes on the big issues: Is today a more partisan time than yesteryear? What role do Labor Unions have in history and today? What is the role of religion in American life? Why is there a Second Amendment?

“From beginning to end, I learn something new with every episode. The grounding of modern day political situations in a historical context is great for anyone, whether a student of history or a student of politics.”

“To my surprise, it appears to be that most rare of specimens: the intellectually sharp but politically neutral commentator. Add a pleasant speaking voice and some apparently well-prepared subject matter and you have an overall winner.”
